Well ... Hello there …
The title of this post says it all. Back that backup UP !!!
Seriously!!! Do it now. This post isn’t going anywhere. You can come back to it.
Are you done? Did you at least start your backup? Here’s my story about that one time, I didn’t back up my backup.
We don’t really think about this. We use our computers day to day without thinking of the possible loss we might face. Then the day rolls on by where we are shit out of luck and begin to scream internally because we've lost our entire iTunes library, along with the many pictures we’ve taken over the past decade of our lifetime.
Enter the “BackUp”
Having a redundant copy of your stuff doesn’t sound so bad. Hard drives are becoming smaller in size and larger in capacity. Big woop. They still FAIL!
My 3TB desktop hard drive FAILED after just 5 months of sitting on my desk.
… sitting on my desk.
It was NEVER MOOOOOOVED. It served as my computer's expansion drive. Mac laptops don’t come with much space these days. What the hell is a guy to do with 250GB of Flash storage. Guess what I do because of that limited space?? I keep all of my video content, along with music and all that heavy memory sucking data on that 3TB hard drive as my backup.
And it FAILED.
My life sunk at that very moment. I realized the following:
- I can’t access my files.
- I’ve only had this hard drive for so long and it’s been sitting on my desk
- Recovering all of this stuff will be necessary, and pricey as FUUUUUUH.
So I begin doing research on how to recover my data after I assessed the situation at hand.
- Staples = $1500
- Best Buy Geek Squad = $850
- Seagate (the actual manufacturer) = $699
WHAT THE FRENCH TOAST MAAAAAAN?!?!!?!
I’m a smart guy. I shop around. I ask questions. I create theories. The most valuable theory I came up with was…
“These big companies send out your hard drive to a third party lab”
Duh!!! So why would I need to pay them to pay someone else, when I can go to that someone else my dam self. So I did.
- Data Recovery Services = $495
Not only did I save money, I saved shipping and processing time. All of the other companies expected a 3 week wait time.
Fudge Out of Here!!
Moral of the Story:
Backup Your BackUps !!
If you don’t, you’ll be in a situation where you have to decide whether your data was worth it. My data contained my career advancement content and my memories; that was worth more than what I paid for the recovery. As for you, you may be fine with taking a loss.
... Or you could just back up your data. (-__-)
